“Okay, I can do this,” Adeline said to the empty room.
She ran through her strategy. After training in the Fae order for the last couple of years, she was an expert in identifying an opponent’s weaknesses. A mental list of all of the possible strategies for the situation spread before her. She clicked her tongue. It was a formidable foe, but not one she couldn’t tackle. Heart racing, palms sweaty, she closed her eyes and took a breath. She was ready.
With a sudden start, she began to run through the dreadfully boring task of choosing a company for ducted heating repairs near Canberra. It was a task that was embarrassingly difficult, given Adeline’s weakness for research.
She held her breath. With conviction, she created a ranked list of the saviours who could stop her from the broken air conditioner beast that had invaded her room that winter. The A/C was a tough opponent and she would need the back up in order to taste the sweet victory of a warm morning again.
To conquer the aircon, she would need to find the right heating services and repairs. Canberra was a city full of professionals, at least. The expert advice they could provide would mean that she would be toasty in no time.
It just meant that she had to shiver for now. Her head began to hurt more than it ever did in training – even more so than when she had gotten a concussion during a sparring match last week. The very activity of sitting on her computer, eyes squinting at webpage after webpage, filled her with exhaustion.
Her body fidgeted, growing restless from the focus. It was a good thing that the Order didn’t require the recruits to take any written exams. Adeline’s brain was not made for studying. But, in the end, she knew the taste of sweet victory was within her grasp.
She wouldn’t bow down. The aircon would not defeat her.
