Allergy Management

Only two weeks till Natasha gets here… yay! Backstory: Natasha is my best bud from university, who’s been living in Berlin for the last decade. She’s finally moving back to Melbourne, and is going to be staying with me while looking for a place to live.

I know I shouldn’t expect it to be exactly as it was back in the day. I have a two year-old, for starters, and things are most likely different with her as well. One thing she mentioned is that she’s developed a high level of sensitivity to allergens since moving to Berlin. Things like dust, cat hair, mildew – pretty common household stuff – seem to be particular culprits, and aggravate her asthma.

That’s something that’s on my to-do, list actually – getting on top of some deep cleaning around the house. I don’t have a cat, but I did have one six months back (RIP Henrietta). I’m a bit concerned that there’s still a whole lot of hair in amongst the furniture. Hey, don’t look at me like that… when was the last time you cleaned your upholstery?

I’m actually thinking of investing in professional professional mattress cleaning. Melbourne people: do you have any leads on this? Natasha will be sleeping in the spare room, and Henrietta used to spend a lot of time in there. Plus, it’s anybody’s guess what the go is with the dust mite situation in there.

I don’t know… am I being paranoid? Regardless, I suppose it can’t hurt to have the cleaning done. It’s not like there aren’t plenty of other jobs that I’d be happy to turn over to a pro cleaning service. For one thing, I could do with a bit of help in the field of removing carpet stains. I’ve tried everything on those crayon smears and nothing seems to work. There is nothing to be done but to get the very best carpet cleaning Melbourne has ever seen. I don’t care how much it costs I want these stains gone. They’re all over the vinyl flooring, too, come to think of it. Having a toddler doesn’t go so well with home maintenance, as it turns out.

It’s a bit of a relief that I had new carpet installed only last month. That means I don’t have to go through the hassle of steam cleaning the whole place. I’d happily do it, though, if it was standing in the way of Natasha staying over. I’ll be going down that road soon enough, anyway, now that I’ve got this expanse of carpet… feels good, though.

You know, it’s probably useful for me to be aware of all this allergy-related home maintenance stuff, having a little kid and all. She hasn’t shown any signs of asthma or eczema, which is good, but those kinds of conditions seem to be relatively common among other kids her age.
